Another school year is over and with it a series of events celebrating students and graduates. School District 72 hosted an Aboriginal Grad event at the Wei Wai Kum Kwanwatsi Big House in June. This event acknowledged all high school graduates in the district who self-identify as Aboriginal.
These included the following graduates from the Wei Wai Kum First Nation: Sabastian Lafleur, Tanisha Matilpi, Chance Roberts, Mark Anthony Roberts, Kyle Smith, and Madison Turgeon. The Band will honor these graduates with an ad in the Campbell River Mirror on July 11.
Kwanwatsi Child Care Centre also held an event in the Big House. The June 22 ceremony marked the graduation from pre-school of (from left to right in the photo): Whitney Armstrong, Maddox Isaac, Kaitlyn Nelson, Kaislee Spratt, Jake Lakes, Iylla John –Cliffe, Emily Moon, and Donavon Thomas. Isiah Moon-Hackett also graduated but is not in the photo.
The event also included a blessing of the Kwanwatsi Bidu, which means “little Big House”, that has been constructed in the Centre to support the children in their cultural teachings.
The preschool graduation is intended to support and encourage the children in their transition to kindergarten and also provide an opportunity to celebrate their culture, with performances of traditional dancing and singing that the children have learned in working with parent volunteers and Elders.
The year-end celebration of all Wei Wai Kum students also took place Friday, June 22. The threat of cool, wet weather prompted a change of location from the beach to Thunderbird Hall but it did not dampen spirits as students, parents and community members marked the end of another school year.
Congratulations to all students and gilakas’la to all the hard-working volunteers and employees who organized these events in their honour!
