The Wei Wai Kum First Nation is sponsoring two workshops July 6 and 7 with Cultural and Wellness Leader Andrea Cranmer. Called “Empowering our Village, Awaken Your Spirit”, they will focus on spiritual laws such as Maya’ xala: respecting self, others, and the environment.
Andrea, a member of the ‘ Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay, says she designed the workshops to help participants integrate ancient wisdom and teachings into everyday life. Participants will receive tools to communicate effectively, to face life challenges, and also celebrate the blessings of life.
“Most of all we want all participants to love themselves, respect themselves, so they can love and respect others,” says Andrea, who says she uses lots of humor in her workshops to make everyone feel safe and comfortable. “Participants learn the meaning and art of forgiveness. [They] learn about their spirit gifts so they can share them with their families and community and beyond. The ongoing goal is for participants to be healthy, strong, capable leaders and good decision-makers.”
The workshops are sponsored by the Nation’ s Social Development Department. The Thursday July 6 workshop is for women only. The Friday July 7 workshop is for both men and women. They run from 9:30 – 4 p.m. in Thunderbird Hall. They are free and open to all. Registration is not required but is recommended in order to guarantee a spot and to help organizers plan meals. Register or ask for more information by emailing reception@weiwaikum.ca or phoning 250-286-6949.
