The Wei Wai Kum First Nation provides funding assistance for occupational skills training as one way to support the employability of Band Members. Funding is offered toward the cost of tuition and books and supplies (such as tools and specialized clothing) for both part-time and full-time students. Full-time students are also eligible to receive a living allowance.
Applications are considered throughout the year. The Band’s occupational skills training guidelines state that to be eligible for funding, an applicant must be:
- a registered member of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation (Campbell River Indian Band)
- a resident of Canada for the last 12 months, and
- accepted to an occupational training program that is less than one academic year in length (applicants in programs that are one academic year or longer should apply for post-secondary education funding), and that provides a certificate upon graduation that is recognized by the industry
Funding from this program is intended to augment financial assistance provided by other agencies, with the exception of awards for scholarship (i.e., awards that are earned in competition with other students). These awards are considered to be incentive income and do not affect the calculation of assistance benefits.
