Taxation & Bylaws

Taxation

Two of the most important bylaws for the Wei Wai Kum First Nation (Campbell River Indian Band) are the Property Taxation and the Property Assessment bylaws. Enacted in 2003, these bylaws give the Band tax jurisdiction over reserve lands.

The Band collects property taxes from the commercial properties located on Campbell River Indian Reserve #11. These include:

  • Fortis
  • Great Canadian Oil Change
  • Home Depot
  • Northwest Realty
  • Nyrstar
  • Shaw
  • Telus
  • Walmart

As specified by the Property Taxation Bylaw, an annual Expenditure Bylaw governs spending. Tax revenue is used to pay for the services the Band provides to its commercial tenants, such as fire protection, water and sewer infrastructure, road maintenance and bylaw enforcement. These revenues also support programs and services offered to the Wei Wai Kum community, including the:

  • Elders Program
  • Youth Program
  • Culture Program
  • Thunderbird Recreation
  • Summer Public Works Crew
  • Infrastructure upgrades and purchases
